What are PFOA, PFOS and PFAS?

PFAS encompasses a group of man-made chemicals that have found application in a diverse array of products over the years, including firefighting foams, non-stick cookware, food packaging, and stain-resistant fabrics. A specific type of PFAS, PFOA & PFOS, is commonly employed in these items. These chemicals are commonly called forever chemicals because they do not breakdown or ever go away. These collect in the environment and can bioaccumulate in human bodies over time, potentially leading to various health impacts.

Understanding PFOA, PFAS and PFOS

Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and Perfluorooctanesulfonic acids (PFOA) are chemicals that have been used extensively in various industrial applications and consumer products. Due to their widespread use and persistence, PFAS and PFOA have become contaminants of concern, as they do not break down in the environment and can accumulate in the human body, potentially leading to adverse health effects.

How PFOA Impact Your Health

Exposure to PFOA, PFOS & PFAS has been linked to a range of adverse health effects, including:

  • Developmental delays in children

  • Increased risk of certain cancers

  • Disruption of the immune system

  • Hormone imbalances

  • Reproductive effects

  • Negative impacts on liver and kidney function

It is crucial to reduce your exposure to these forever chemicals to protect your health and well-being.

What is the NJ Private Well Testing Act

The New Jersey Private Well Testing Act (PWTA) is a crucial consumer protection law aimed at ensuring safe drinking water from private wells. Enacted in March 2001, it requires that sellers of properties with potable wells conduct thorough testing of untreated groundwater for up to 43 specific parameters before any property transaction. This law promotes public health by ensuring that both buyers and sellers review water quality results prior to closing, making informed decisions possible.

PWTA Requirements for Landlords and Tenants

In addition to its implications for property sales, the PWTA mandates that landlords test their well water every five years and share those results with tenants. This not only emphasizes the importance of water quality but also protects residents from potential health risks associated with contaminants. Notably, the rising concerns around synthetic chemicals like PFAS and PFOA highlight the need for regular testing, as these substances can accumulate in the environment and pose serious health risks, including developmental delays and increased cancer risk.

What exactly are PFAS, and why are they being found in North Jersey water?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals used since the 1940s in non-stick cookware, water-repellent clothing, and firefighting foams. Because Northern New Jersey has a dense industrial history, these "forever chemicals" have leached into the groundwater and aquifers that feed both municipal systems and private wells in towns like Ridgewood, West Milford, and Wayne. They are called "forever chemicals" because they do not break down naturally and can accumulate in the human body over time.
Are the PFAS levels in Bergen and Passaic Counties safe?
New Jersey has some of the strictest standards in the nation. The NJDEP has set Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for three specific compounds:
  • PFOA: 14 parts per trillion (ppt)
  • PFOS: 13 parts per trillion (ppt)
  • PFNA: 13 parts per trillion (ppt)
While many municipal providers, like the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC), have installed advanced treatment systems to meet these goals, private well owners in Bergen and Passaic are responsible for their own testing. Johnny always tells customers: "If you can't measure it, you can't manage it."
Can I just boil my water to remove PFAS?
No. In fact, boiling water can actually increase the concentration of PFAS. Since these chemicals do not evaporate, boiling off the water leaves a higher concentration of the contaminants in the remaining liquid. To safely remove PFAS, you need physical filtration or molecular separation, not heat.
Will a standard pitcher filter (like Brita) protect my family?
Most standard "off-the-shelf" pitcher or refrigerator filters are designed to improve taste and odor by removing chlorine, but they are often ineffective against the microscopic molecular structure of PFAS. For reliable removal, the NJDEP and Johnny recommend systems certified to NSF/ANSI standards 53 or 58, which specifically cover PFAS reduction.
What is the best way to remove PFAS from my home's water?
At Aqua Doctor, we specialize in two primary "Gold Standard" solutions: Reverse Osmosis (RO), which is highly effective for drinking water using a semi-permeable membrane to strip away up to 99% of contaminants, and Whole-House Granular Activated Carbon (GAC). Since PFAS can also be absorbed through the skin or inhaled via steam during showers, many Bergen County homeowners opt for a "Point-of-Entry" (POET) system that treats every drop of water entering the home.
How do I know if my private well in Passaic or Bergen County has PFAS?
Under the New Jersey Private Well Testing Act (PWTA), PFAS testing is now required during real estate transactions. However, if you aren't selling your home, we recommend testing every 1–2 years. Because Johnny is a State Certified Vendor, Aqua Doctor can perform precise onsite testing and, if levels are high, we can often help homeowners navigate the NJ Spill Fund for potential reimbursement on filtration systems.
